Position Summary

Primary responsibilities include installs, repairs, maintains and administers multiple communications infrastructure and systems within CPS Energy. This includes fiber optic networks, inside / outside plant fiber cable, wave division multiplexing systems, ethernet private line transport networks as well as provisioning and administration of IP based networks.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain, repair, monitor and administer ISP/OSP infrastructure including optical transport systems, associated layer 2 ethernet systems, operational support telephony system components, fiber optic and copper cabling systems, power line carrier systems used in the control and telemetry of electric and gas systems.
  • Installation of fiber optic Transport systems, OSP fiber optic cables both aerial and underground to include attachments, grounding, weather proofing, connectors, SFP’s and associated related hardware. System configuration and related AC or DC power. 
  • Perform field level troubleshooting of all OSP/ISP infrastructure equipment, physical wiring, interrogate L1/L2 devices, perform upgrades, overbuilds, and expansions as necessary. 
  • Pursues and maintains a high level of technical proficiency as technology evolves. 
  • Performs systems field integration to support corporate applications.
  • Supports communications systems associated with gas and electric SCADA systems.
  • Maintains transport network management systems for moves adds deletes of elements.
  • Participates in investigations related to incidents and problems affecting communication services.
  • Interacts with Telecommunications engineering and maintenance personnel, organization employees in a maintenance capacity or servicing end-user equipment and vendors/contractors supplying goods and/or services to the organization.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in operating computer and applications necessary for day to day job duties.
  • Knowledgeable in use of various test equipment, including OTDR, Fusion Splicer, Power Meter, TDM analyzer and multi-meter.
  • Accurately follow instructions and complete assigned course of action in accordance with scope of work (SOW) and methods of procedures (MOPs) and track work via checklists.
  • Perform field level troubleshooting including wiring, devise access, Troubleshoot, upgrade and expand Infrastructure Networks or Customer sites.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
     

Minimum Skills

Minimum Knowledge and Abilities

Hands-on experience with a broad range of network technologies, including: L1/L2 optical networking, WDM, Power Line Carrier, Tele-protection, data networking technologies (routing, switching firewalls).
Experience with OSP and ISP fiber construction methods including aerial and underground methods and technics.
Basic understanding of data networking protocols including but not limited to OSPF, ISIS, BGP, EIGRP, VOIP, IP/MPLS, and MPLS-TP.
Ability to provision and configure L1 and L2 network elements.
Basic understanding of functionality of TDM and Ethernet transport network equipment and systems.
Experience working with Network Management Systems & monitoring Tools.
Communicate directly with status updates with chain of command, internal and external customers.
Monitor alert systems and take appropriate action.
Assist in management of the emergency restoration process for support requests requiring escalation.
Work with support technicians and management to resolve or mitigate known or evolving network issues.
Provide excellent support and service to the customer.
Monitors and helps maintain critical equipment inventories to ensure materials are available for break/fix repairs as needed.
Valid Class C Texas Driver’s License.
Must have a good driving record.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Any relevant Cisco, Juniper, Adrian, Nokia Networking Certifications a plus.
  • Hands-on experience with a broad range of network technologies, including: L1/L2 optical networking, WDM, Power Line Carrier, Tele-protection, data networking technologies (routing, switching firewalls).
  • Hands on Experience with OSP and ISP fiber construction methods including aerial and underground methods and technics.
  • Hands on experience with data networking protocols including but not limited to OSPF, ISIS, BGP, EIGRP, VOIP, IP/MPLS, and MPLS-TP.
  • Hands on experience provisioning and configuring L1 and L2 network elements.
  • Hands on experience with TDM and Ethernet transport network equipment and systems.
  • Experience working with Network Management Systems & monitoring Tools.
  • Must be a self-starter with the ability to work independently without continuous supervision with a desire and ability to learn and retain new technologies.
  • Must be a team player and have excellent interpersonal communications skills.
  • Ability to analyze and troubleshoot and provide direction on possible cause and corrective actions depending on the event severity.
  • Ability to maintain the security of network infrastructure and compliance with all applicable industry and security standards (NERC CIP, PCI, SOX etc.).
  • Maintain the availability and integrity of network infrastructure, including wired and wireless networks, network security infrastructure, and voice transport infrastructure.
  • Proficient with network management operational tools such as Cisco Prime, Cisco EPNM, VistaNet, ESRI, and ProVision.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Package, including word processing, spreadsheets, database, presentation software, electronic mail and scheduling.

Minimum Education

Associate Degree in a Technical Area AAS/AAT/AEET/AE/AET or related technical field. Equivalent Relevant Military Experience or combination

Required Certifications

Working Environment

Works both indoor and outdoor work locations as well as hazardous electric/gas substation environments. Must possess the ability to operate associated test equipment as well as hand and power tools in these elements.
Required to ascend and work out of aerial bucket trucks as well as descend into underground manholes as needed. Manual dexterity, talking, hearing, and repetitive motion skills as needed.
Must be able to travel to and from meetings, training sessions or other business-related events. Must be able to work after hours work and 24-hour x 7 day a week, call duty assignments are required.

Physical Demands

Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally with or without accommodation, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently with or without accommodation, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Ability to perform these duties in all weather conditions and climates including heat, cold, rain, etc. Must be able to identify all colors associated with telecommunications cables and equipment.
