Position Summary

Supervises NDE specialists assigned to the section who are assigned technical duties in the Power Generation to test power plant equipment for soundness providing for increased reliability.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Supervise Quality Control CWI oversight of welding repairs including inspecting and assessing the strength and quality of welds, ensuring the correct equipment is being used, checking weld specifications, and ensuring all safety regulations are being adhered to.
  • Directly supervises NDE personnel in the following test methods: visual inspection (VT), magnetic particle (MT), penetrant-dye (PT), ultrasonic (UT), eddy current (ET), infrared thermography (IR) or any other methods approved by the American Society for Non-Destructive Testing (ASNT).
  • Schedules all daily, overhaul and outage NDE activities and inspections pertaining to power plant components.  Schedules inspection activities for the boiler inspection group.
  • Oversee work in progress to ensure that workmanship conforms to specifications and the adherence to schedules.
  • Interprets and analyses NDE results.  Reviews and presents NDE results and recommendations to plant management and crafts.  
  • Documents test information and compiles and writes periodic reports on progress, findings, materials used and costs, and adjusts work schedules.
  • Develops and implements NDE procedures to ensure reliable and safe test power plant equipment for soundness.  Performs examinations as required to maintain required quality standards applicable to the Energy Supply Department. 
  • Works with engineering and plant staff to resolve problems found during NDE inspections.  Determines long range solutions to minimize failures.
  • Develops operating and equipment budget for NDE section.
  • Maintains short- and long-term staffing levels.  
  • Coordinates and supervises NDE contractor activities.
  • Develops and supervises metallurgical evaluations and analyses services contract.
  • Ensures training and certification of NDE Specialists.  
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Skills

Minimum Knowledge and Abilities

Formal training for ASNT Level II certification in the following test methods: Visual, penetrant/dye, magnetic particle, ultrasonic basic and weld inspection, and infrared/thermography - preferred.
Experience in power plant Operations and Maintenance.
Experience in various power plant NDE technologies - preferred.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Package, including word processing, spreadsheets, database, presentation software, electronic mail and scheduling.
Must have favorable driving record; Valid Class C Texas Driver’s License.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of college credits as specified in the NDE Specialist program (~30 semester hours).

Minimum Education

High School Diploma or GED Equivalent

Working Environment

Indoor and outdoor work. The work assignments will be performed in places that are dirty/dusty, dimly lit, confined, highly elevated with possible exposure to temperature variations, high voltage, airborne particles and other adverse conditions.
Work overtime as required, which may include weekends and holidays. The position entails 90 % fieldwork and 10% office work.
Ability to travel to and from power plant sites, training sessions, and other business-related activities.

Physical Demands

Requires manual dexterity, sitting, standing, walking, stopping, kneeling, crouch, and crawling.
Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally with or without accommodation, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently with or without accommodation, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Agility to climb and maneuver through power plant components (turbines, boilers, etc.). Ability to differentiate between colors. Wearing appropriate PPE.
