Position Summary

A Non-Destructive Evaluation Specialist will be assigned technical duties in the Power Production department to test power plant equipment for soundness. Procedures to be used will include visual inspection (VT), magnetic particle (MT), liquid penetrant (PT), ultrasonic (UT), eddy current (ET), infrared thermography (IR), or any other methods approved by the American Society for Non-Destructive Testing (ASNT). Hereafter, in this program description, the Non-Destructive Evaluation Specialist will be referred to as NDE Specialist. The specialist serves as a dedicated on-site technician in the areas of NDE.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Examines various power plant components using the following non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques: Visual Inspection (VT), Magnetic Particle (MT), Liquid Penetrant (PT), Ultrasonic (UT), Eddy Current (ET), Infrared Thermography (IR).
  • Performs NDT and interprets results to determine and/or anticipate material soundness.
  • Maintains Level II certification per American Society for Non- Destructive Testing (ASNT) guidelines.
  • Inspects turbine, valves, boiler and associated equipment.
  • Conducts condition and reliability assessment of boiler components.
  • Makes recommendations for scheduling boiler component maintenance and repair, including the type of component maintenance or repair required.
  • Assists leadership and work groups in decision making for effective equipment use.
  • Performs visual inspections; operates specialized testing equipment to determine metal conditions, thickness, cracks and failures.
  • Enter test information; assisting with compiling and writing of overhaul/outage and inspection reports
  • Prepare detailed inspection results reports, issue notifications, research and monitor repair process.
  • Supports crafts on material identification, failure locations and repairs options.
  • Participates in Boiler QA/QC audits.
  • Oversees NDE contractor activities.
  • Maintains reporting software.
  • Maintains ANST certification records on NDE personnel and equipment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Skills

Minimum Knowledge and Abilities

Journeymen craftsman or experience in utility / industrial maintenance or operations
ASNT Level II certification in the following test methods: Visual, penetrant/dye, magnetic particle, ultrasonic basic and weld inspection, and infrared/thermography.
Ability to communication with the various maintenance crafts and engineering groups to ensure proper repair and/or replacements of defective components.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Ability to lift/move/transport equipment
Ability to climb and maneuver through power plant components (turbines, boilers, etc.)
Ability to differentiate between colors
Ability to work overtime including nights, weekends, or holidays
Possess a valid driver’s license with a history of a safe driving record in accordance with CPSE policies, procedures, safety standards, and applicable laws and regulations
Must pass NERC related background checks
Ability to analyze and solve complex situations with effective logical/reasoning skills
Must be self-motivated, inquisitive and demonstrate a high level of accountability
Must be able to work under pressure alone and/ or as part of a team
Ability to work in an environment that includes exposure to dirt, dust, dim lighting, confined spaces and high elevations with possible exposure to temperature variations, high voltage, airborne particles and adverse conditions
Certified Welding Inspector Certification
Ability to pass Drug Test

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in power plant or related heavy industry
  • Adept at using computers and other forms of technology related to his/her job; keeps up to date on technological changes; adapts work approach to keep pace with innovations in technology

Working Environment

Indoor and outdoor work, walking, standing, sitting, hearing, bending, and crouching.
Indoor and outdoor work. The work assignments will be performed in places that are dirty/dusty, dimly lit, confined, highly elevated with possible exposure to temperature variations, high voltage, airborne particles and other adverse conditions.
Work overtime as required, which may include weekends and holidays. The position entails 90% fieldwork and 10% office work. Use of personal computing equipment, communication devices, and personal safety equipment.
Ability to travel to and from power plant sites, training sessions, and other business-related activities.

Physical Demands

Requires manual dexterity, sitting, standing, walking, stopping, kneeling, crouch, and crawling.
Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally with or without accommodation, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently with or without accommodation, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Agility to climb and maneuver through power plant components (turbines, boilers, etc.). Ability to differentiate between colors. Wearing appropriate PPE.
