Position Summary
Under the general supervision of the Manager, Plant Operations, the Sr Control Room Operator is responsible for the operation of billion-dollar assets and maximizing power plant production in a safe and environmentally responsible manner while seeking continuous improvement. Monitors performance of the completion of numerous tasks carried out by a team of skilled hourly operations & maintenance personnel 24/7/365 while coordinating communications to a variety of internal & external customers. Provides guidance and coordinates overall plant operation and maintenance activities ensuring safety of personnel, reliability, and efficiency of all plant equipment.
Tasks and Responsibilities
- Ensures all safety rules and regulations are followed including the coordination and supervision of equipment isolation and Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO) procedures.
- Ensures that the power plant is operating within all established guidelines for CPS Energy, state, federal environmental and regulatory compliance obligations.
- Ensures compliance with CPS Energy Conduct of Operations Manual.
- Monitors performance and provides guidance to all personnel on the plant property, coordinating plant maintenance activities, restoration to service of all plant equipment after maintenance activities, proper operation of all plant equipment, and the continuity of operations from shift to shift.
- Designated Site Incident Commander during all emergency conditions and events.
- Monitors safety and security performance of plant personnel and the public during emergency response situations, e.g., fires, explosions, high pressure steam/water leaks, chemical spill/release events, sabotage, lake releases.
- Monitors performance and provides guidance related to adherence to and compliance with all OSHA, TCEQ, EPA, NERC, ERCOT, Texas RE, and PUC requirements.
- Responsible for the proper start-up, operation, shutdown of assigned generating units, and the coordination of load and/or voltage output increases and reductions with QSE and TO.
- Monitors competency levels of all operating staff on assigned team and develops training plans with the Operations Manager to correct deficiencies.
- Responsible for daily coordination of weekly and outage maintenance scheduling, establishing maintenance priorities, and general housekeeping and cleanliness of assigned equipment and the overall plant.
- Monitors completion of employee training and development milestones, ensuring alignment and adherence to the 5-year S.T.E.P. program and/or O&M Qualification Standards for all operating staff on assigned team.
- Responsible for reviewing/updating, procedures, checklists, plant system drawings (P&ID’s).
- Responsible for calling in and monitoring performance of plant maintenance crews; maintain operating staff levels during nights, weekends, holidays, and severe weather events.
- Ensures all annual control room operator simulator training hour requirements have been completed to assist in the reduction/prevention of human performance events.
- Ensures all derates and outages have been entered into the GADS reporting software with correct cause and amp codes.
- Responsible for ensuring equipment deficiencies (operating outside of established guidelines) are identified and appropriate work notifications/requests are generated within the computerized maintenance management system.
- Responsible for procedural adherence to established critical power plant operating procedures.
- Responsible for ensuing compliance with all CPS Energy policies for self, and all operating staff.
- Communicates and leads in accordance with company vision and core values.
- Proficiently performs control room operator, turbine tender, auxiliary operator and/or duties associated with O&M Tech 1,2 3 job requirements when necessary.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications
- Experience as a CPS Energy Control Room Operator.
- Experience in a relief operator (RO) position.
- Superior working knowledge of all plant steam, mechanical, electrical, chemical systems and their appropriate integration for efficient and effective production.
