Position Summary
The purpose of this position is to manage and lead the Integrated System Planning (ISP) team responsible for: the development of CPS Energy’s 25-year long-range integrated system plan, short- and long-term data integration, performing forward looking analysis, to include integration of system and financial data enabling and informing critical business decisions. This role centers on advanced modeling and analysis using varying software tools such as PSSE, PLEXOS, and Aurora to support power flow studies, capacity expansion, production cost modeling, resource adequacy, and load forecasting. In addition to deep technical and analytical responsibilities, the role is also supporting public-facing business plan strategies, requiring strong communication skills to engage effectively with regulators and industry peers. The leader of ISP will also be responsible for the development of a comprehensive plan across generation, transmission, distribution, natural gas and customer side systems, realizing the most reliable, cost-effective, reliable, decarbonized approach to serve the community. This leader will also prepare and provide materials that are presented to the CEO Direct Reports, the Board of Trustees, and City of San Antonio staff.
Tasks and Responsibilities
Responsible for optimizing system build-out plans with native load growth, evolving regulatory and federal markets, and development of a long-term integrated system planning team, and maturing the (technical and strategic) teams’ ability to interpret and understand multiple data sets.
Utilize strategic systems, build out plans, and build out data sets that integrate system plans across multiple business units and optimize system performance, providing the best value for CPS Energy customers.
Support long-term corporate planning initiatives and align with budget planning teams.
Provide thought leadership, set technical strategies, and identify possible uses of data science methods in integrating system planning information from multiple sources/departments, and oversee the accuracy, quality, and effectiveness of the long-term plans, and ensure the development and tracking of gap-closing measures as needed to meet organizational financial and operational targets.
Provides strategic guidance, team member development, and critical thinking to help screen for the most advantageous solutions.
Engage with all facets of the utility industry, identify key trends and future business risks, and develop risk mitigation strategies to protect CPS Energy from industry risks.
Directs the preparation of modeling and analysis, which will develop and inform long-term integrated system plans by integrating data from multiple systems into an optimized strategy.
Assembles and leads internal cross-functional, multi-disciplinary teams through the solicitation and negotiation processes for new tools needed to perform work.
Direct and develop repeatable processes to run complex business modeling and financial analysis to support assessment and recommendations of key corporate strategic initiatives, including asset valuation, i.e., least cost, sufficient capacity, load flexibility, and balanced supply and demand.
Collaborates with multiple business units to review and analyze associated integrated system plans to assess value.
Serves as a trusted advisor and liaison to the business units and Senior Leadership & provides forward guidance on performance and recommendations to leadership.
Leads process improvement initiatives for the forecasting cycle, both within the team and with cross-functional teams.
Leads, coaches, and develops a team composed of engineers and technical analysts, providing timely, honest performance feedback.
Provides leadership on employee engagement initiatives within Integrated System Planning, promoting the Core Values.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Skills
Minimum Knowledge and Abilities
Preferred Qualifications
MBA with a concentration in Engineering, Analytics, Accounting, Finance, Economics, or related field.
PE Professional Engineer in state of Texas, CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst), CMA (Certified Management Accountant), FP&A certification or comparable professional designation.
Demonstrated leadership experience guiding high-performing technical teams.
Experience with generation forecasting software, and Enterprise Resource Planning solutions (e.g., SAP, Oracle, etc.).
Experience with the electric or gas utility industry gained through experience at an electric / gas utility, consulting agency, or other professional service provider serving the industry.
Transmission experience with modeling and simulation, data mining, or general data analytics.
Experience with Data Visualization software and techniques (e.g., Tableau, Power BI).
Significant Project Management experience, or PMP Certification.
