Position Summary

The Manager of Generation Performance provides strategic and operational leadership to drive operational excellence and performance optimization across CPS Energy’s power generation fleet.  This position ensures that generation assets operate safely, reliably, efficiently, and in alignment with corporate and regulatory objectives.  The manager provides strategic insight and technical leadership to improve plant performance, integrates data-driven decision-making into daily operations, and fosters a culture of continuous improvement across all facilities.  Acting as a central link between plant operation, maintenance and engineering teams, this role translates performance data and operational analyses into actionable strategies that enhance asset value and long-term sustainability.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Monitor, analyze, and report on generation fleet performance, including reliability, efficiency, heat rate, availability and cost metrics.
  • Develop and maintain dashboards and KPI tracking tools to assess operational performance and identify improvement opportunities.
  • Conduct performance benchmarking against internal targets and industry peers; integrate best practices into operational processes.
  • Lead and coordinate root cause analyses for performance deviations or equipment failures; ensure effective implementation of corrective actions.
  • Facilitate performance reviews and lessons-learned sessions to drive cross-functional learning and improvement.
  • Collaborate with department leadership on long-term asset planning, lifecycle optimization, and capital improvement prioritization.
  • Provide input into generation asset strategies to ensure alignment with corporate goals and regulatory requirements.
  • Support major outage planning and evaluate post-outage performance to identify efficiency and reliability gains.
  • Partner with plant managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to align operational decisions with financial and business objectives.
  • Mentor and develop plant performance personnel, fostering technical expertise and analytical capability across the team.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, data-driven decision-making, and operational excellence throughout the organization.
  • Prepare and present regular performance reports, improvement plans, and strategic recommendations to executive leadership.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with external performance analytics vendor to ensure effective use of anomaly detection and pattern recognition insights.  Leads coordination across generation facilities to drive engagement, extract actionable findings, and realize full-service value.
  • Support or lead special projects related to generation performance, compliance initiatives, or enterprise performance improvement goals.
  • Provide leadership and supervision to a team of performance professionals, including performance analysts and performance engineers, ensuring efficient and timely completion of analyses, reports, and performance improvement initiatives.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as needed to support organizational goals and operational excellence.

Minimum Skills

Minimum Knowledge and Abilities

Extensive knowledge of power generation operations and systems, performance engineering principles, plant efficiency metrics and maintenance strategies.
Experience with data analytics, KPI development, and performance management methodologies used in generation fleet optimization.
Utilizing software tools and systems for data analysis, reporting and performance tracking (e.g., PI, Power BI, or similar).
Analyzing complex operational data to identify trends, anomalies, and improvement opportunities.
Strong organizational skills, along with proven ability to lead teams and deliver results in a matrixed, fast-paced work environment.
Translate analytical insights into actionable operational strategies and improvement plans.
Ability to lead and motivate a team of engineers and analysts to achieve performance and professional development goals.
Proficient in Microsoft Office business applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, database, presentation software, electronic mail, and scheduling.
Demonstrates a strong sense of dependability and of accountability; shows initiative to improve the overall throughput and financial goals of the organization.
Sense of urgency; drives to a successful conclusion; possesses a bias for action.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, Electrical or related Engineering field.
    Effective oral and written communication skills, including presentation skills.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks with urgency by delivering on-time accurate results.
  • Ability to translate business objectives into strategic/tactical processes.
  • Ability to work in a team environment, coordinating with other areas to achieve goals and objectives.

Minimum Education

High School Diploma or GED Equivalent

Working Environment

Work is performed indoors & outdoors. Operating computer, manual dexterity, talking, hearing, and repetitive motion.
Ability to travel to and from meetings, training sessions or other business-related events. After hours work may be required.

Physical Demands

Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met.
