Position Summary
This role is a heavy equipment technical trainer. Develops, facilitates, and evaluates training programs for heavy equipment operators across diverse machinery types and job sites. Integrates safety protocols, operational standards, and regulatory compliance into instruction. Reviews performance data, identifies skill gaps, and incorporates emerging technologies and industry trends to enhance training effectiveness.
Tasks and Responsibilities
- Continuously improve training effectiveness by incorporating safety, reliability, and customer service.
- Partners with business units and customers to coordinate, develop and facilitate training programs that meet desired business outcomes.
- Creates and coordinates training schedules, monitors course enrollments, and ensures course credit up completion, tracks, and reports attendance, and provides support for pre or post course activities.
- Organizes, coordinates, and maintains all training related resources including training materials, audio/visual equipment, LMS System, SAP, and other applicable training software such as Camtasia.
- Measures and reports learning outcomes by creating and implementing knowledge and skill-based assessments.
- Coordinates, supports and training delivery staff.
- Applies and adapts an instructional design process to create Instructor Led and Computer-Based Training course documentation (i.e., learning objectives, participant guides, facilitator guides, assessments, handouts, visual aids, how-to’s, etc.).
- Develops business processes to support and sustain learning outcomes, ensure adherence to work practices and policies as part of the transfer of learning to actual work performance/behavior.
- Conducts analyses of training needs to determine opportunities for improving performance and to provide customized training for all areas.
- Benchmarks, researches, identifies, and implements best practices for training methods and technology into new and revised training programs.
- Creates training-related communication materials, markets the availability of training courses, and promotes developmental opportunities across the enterprise.
- Conducts on-site observations and personnel interviews to determine training needs and support post-training utilization of skills for business unit operating systems or procedures.
Minimum Skills
Minimum Knowledge and Abilities
Preferred Qualifications
• 5+ years of hands-on experience operating and training a wide range of heavy equipment such as excavators, skid steers, forklifts, and aerial work platforms.
• Hold recognized certifications in equipment operation and safety (e.g., NCCCO, OSHA 10/30, or equivalent).
• Knowledge of industry regulations and standards including OSHA, ANSI, and guidelines.
• Ability to design, develop, and deliver interactive training programs through both classroom instruction and field-based simulations.
• Experience with crane and rigging operations, transport tiedown procedures, and the use of standardized hand signals for equipment communication is essential.
• Skilled in conducting equipment safety inspections, operational assessments, and performance evaluations.
• Strong communication and presentation skills to effectively engage diverse learner groups and possess a strong understanding of adult learning principles and training delivery in construction and utilities.
• Proficiency with training technologies such as simulators, e-learning platforms, or instructional design tools is expected, including experience using Canva for visual content creation, Articulate for interactive course development, and 7 taps for mobile-first microlearning delivery.
• Familiarity with managing training content and tracking learner progress using a Learning Management System (LMS), preferably SAP SuccessFactors, is highly desirable.
• The ability to analyze performance data and adapt training strategies to improve operator proficiency and reduce incidents is essential.
• A valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is preferred, as it supports equipment transport and enhances instructional credibility. Or must be able to obtain within 3 months of start date.
