**Primary Location: Corpus with occasional travel to Laredo and San Antonio 

Position Summary

Serves as champion of CPS Energy’s Safety Programs and as an internal safety consultant/expert. In this capacity, the Safety Professional advises, develops strategies, and leads workplace safety. Provides support and analysis to help employers establish risk controls and management processes that promote sustainable business practice. They work to reduce and eliminate fatalities, injuries, occupational illnesses, they also provide advice on matters related to health and wellness. Will participate with multiple teams to include safety committees, Safety Circuit Teams and coordinating performance of initiatives by Business Unit (BU) personnel. Help establish-cultivate a Safety Culture. Reviews, evaluates and analyzes work environments and designs/develops programs and procedures to control, eliminate and prevent injury(s) caused by chemical, physical and biological agents or ergonomic factors. Conducts inspections, observations and enforces adherence to laws and regulations governing the health and safety of individuals. Responds to and investigates workplace accidents and incidents as they occur and provides root cause analysis to determine preventability or process improvement. Provides training as needed on safety related processes and procedures.
 

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Provides internal consulting, advisement and guidance within CPS Energy, including safety advisory committee, safety steering committee, etc., in line with established best practices and Behavioral Based Safety standards.
  • Works cross functionally with different departments and business units and with all levels of leadership in order to address safety issues and support safety programs. 
  • Investigates accidents and/or injuries and prepares necessary documentation, including incident reporting, root cause analysis and recommend appropriate measures to eliminate or mitigate reoccurrence.
  • Researches and develops Safety related programs, Standard Operating Procedures, Manuals, etc.
  • Prepares and supports safety meetings and related training to designated business areas focusing on safety topics, accident prevention, current processes, and procedures including new hire/contactor orientation.
  • Performs other project and process improvement initiatives as assigned.
  • Coordinates safety audits, site audits, mitigation efforts, observations and long-term improvements.
  • Facilitates safety discussions involving contractors and/or construction projects.
  • Maintains current technical and regulatory knowledge through the reading of manuals/publications and through the attendance of safety seminars/workshops.
  • Oversite of at least (1) Safety Programs
  • Leading Business Unit and Customer Service support.
  • Assists Occupational Health services and the environmental department with ad hoc issues.
  • Answer the 227-SAFE phone and respond to CPSE reported safety events when assigned call duty. 
  • Report to the scene of an event according to the SEN Matrix. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Administrate Duties.
  • Ability to support Power Gen and potential outages which could include working the occasional weekend. 
  • Ability to be on call 24/7

Minimum Skills

Minimum Knowledge and Abilities

Background and/or understanding of BBS (Behavior based safety) concepts.
Related experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
  • Working knowledge of federal and state safety regulations
  • Successful work experience as a Safety Professional in an industrial facility
  • Consulting experience
  • Skilled craft experience
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Associate Safety Professional (ASP)
  • CSHO Construction Industry
  • CSHO General Industry
  • Safety Trained Supervisor STS

Minimum Education

High School Diploma or GED Equivalent

Working Environment

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. Operating computer, manual dexterity, talking, hearing, and repetitive motion. Use of vehicle for business purposes, personal computing equipment, telephone, multi-functioning printer and calculator.
Employee may potentially be exposed to hazardous chemicals, wet or humid conditions, outdoor weather (i.e., heat, cold, rain), noisy and dusty environment.
Ability to travel to and from meetings, training sessions or other business related events. After hours work may be required monthly, or more frequently as needed. Overnight travel may be required.
Additional work areas include, but not limited to: Elevated heights (Transmission, Distribution, and Substations) with energized environment with voltages ranging from 50 volts up to 345kV.
Sub-ground levels (Confined spaces, Vaults/Manholes, Excavation sites, etc.). Working around Natural Gas. Power Production facilities (power plants) May be assigned specifically to individual power plants.

Physical Demands

Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally with or without accommodation, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Travel between plants as needed. Ability to climb up and down ladders and steps.
