Position Summary
The Supervisor Energy Technical Services is responsible for supervising the System Protection Technical Services department to successfully achieve the goals and accountabilities of the section. The System Protection Crew is responsible for maintaining the integrity and reliability of CPS Energy Generation, Transmission, and Distribution systems by maintaining, testing, troubleshooting and repairing protective schemes and their components that monitor these power systems 24 hours a day. This position ensures the System Protection Crew maintains a high level of safety, reliability, and compliance with NERC/ERCOT regulatory requirements. This position is responsible for providing onsite field verification and auditing of 1) technician safety practices to ensure technicians are working safely within CPS Energy requirements and guidelines and 2) verification that technician commissioning and maintenance practices follow CPS Energy requirements and guidelines.
Tasks and Responsibilities
- Provide onsite field verification and auditing of technician safety practices to ensure that technicians are working safely within CPS Energy requirements and guidelines
- Provide oversight of acceptance of capital projects to insure timely and quality work of System Protection Technicians
- Provide onsite field verification and auditing that technician testing and maintenance practices follow CPS Energy requirements and guidelines
- Reviews relay database to determine upcoming maintenance needs and database accuracy
- Coordinates and schedules maintenance with System Operations, Generation, and Key Account Managers to maintain compliance with NERC/ERCOT regulatory requirements and to maintain the integrity and reliability of CPS electric system
- Evaluate and develop technician level I, II, and III skill sets
- Develop testing and maintenance procedures to reduce human error events and improve efficiency
- Provides direction and evaluates the performance and knowledge of all assigned technicians in order to provide merit-based incentive as well as identify adequate training opportunities
- Provides on call 24/7 technical support for technicians
- Reports for call duty call outs as necessary for technician oversight and outage support
- Assists System Operations by being consulted regarding alarms, abnormal conditions, contingency plans, and feasibility of outage plans
- Attends Root Cause Analysis meetings and provides support for Root Cause Analysis investigations
- Reviews Substation Construction/Maintenance and System Test schedules to determine personnel needs for Capital Projects and Maintenance
- Attends developmental and NERC training and keeps the technicians informed of updates to NERC guidelines, standards, and policies
- Works with the Manager to motivate section employees to maintain a high, productive work ethic to effectively meet section accountabilities
- Supports corporate objectives and initiatives by enforcing corporate policy
- Works with Manager to determine budgetary needs for the section
- Performs new equipment commissioning and maintenance as needed
- Fills in and is trained as the backup Subject Matter Expert (SME) for PRC-005 (Protection System Maintenance) and is heavily relied upon during NERC audits
- Reports directly to Executive leadership when the Manager of the area is absent

- Proven supervisory and/or leadership experience
- Extensive experience in testing, maintaining, commissioning, and troubleshooting of Transmission, Distribution, and Generation protective relay systems and associated devices ranging from 345kV to 4160V
- Proven safety leader
- Demonstrated motivational/leadership skills and a desire to improve section performance
- Proven team leader with a history of working and mentoring all levels a team
- Effective organizational skills including the planning, prioritizing, and assigning of work
