Position Summary

The primary duty of a System Protection Engineer is to design protection schemes to ensure that CPS Energy’s transmission, distribution and generation systems continue to maintain a high level of safety, reliability, and compliance with NERC/ERCOT regulatory requirements.  This includes the specifying of protection equipment for substation capital projects, setting protection devices in substations, generating facilities, and on distribution lines, staying current on NERC and ERCOT requirements, and evaluating new protective equipment for application in CPS Energy’s power systems.  System Protection Engineering is also responsible for designing ERCOT Polled Settlement (EPS) Meters for transmission, generation and distributed generation interconnects.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Design protective relay systems for transmission, substation, and distribution systems including the specification and selection of protective relays, current transformers, communications equipment, and associated equipment for construction projects
  • Create engineering Design Packages
  • Create relay one-line drawings
  • Perform short circuit studies, fault calculations, and relay coordination studies
  • Provide settings for microprocessor, solid state, electromechanical relays and electronic reclosers
  • Develop protective relay settings
  • Analyze transmission, substation, and distribution protection system operations
  • Perform breaker rating studies and recommend breaker replacements
  • Develop and review material specifications for protection related equipment
  • Research and study new protective relay technologies and related equipment
  • Review and approve substation schematic drawings
  • Review and approve distributed generation (DG) installations
  • Model transmission, substation, and generation equipment for ERCOT short circuit case creation
  • Participate in ERCOT activities, including travel to various ERCOT meetings and training seminars
  • Develop and update database applications
  • Monitor and assess NERC reliability standards
  • Develop NERC compliance related procedures
  • Perform NERC compliance related activities
  • Develop auditable documentation for NERC compliance
  • Reviews ERCOT EPS Metering protocols
  • Creates EPS Metering design proposals 

Minimum Skills

Minimum Knowledge and Abilities

Approval by Business Unit Executive Leadership, as related to the business need for Engineering Associate 2’s without their EIT.
Ability to effectively work as an individual contributor and contributing team member.
Ability to handle complex assignments with minimum supervision.
Ability to work in a team environment, coordinating with other related areas to complete tasks and projects.

Demonstrates proficiency in basic management of projects and assignments.
Ability to work call duty and occasional unscheduled work in the evenings, weekends, or holidays after experience level permits.
Ability to travel occasionally, to off-site work, to seminars, manufacturing plant inspections, etc.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Package, including word processing, spreadsheets, database, presentation software, electronic mail and scheduling.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Licensed as a Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of Texas
  • Strong background and knowledge of system protection philosophies
  • Experience working with SEL relays

Minimum Education

Bachelor of Science degree in an engineering field from an ABET accredited four-year college or universit Engineer In Training (EIT) designation from Texas Board of Prof Engineers OR Demonstration of advanced skills or specialization appli to the busi area

Working Environment

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. Operating computer, manual dexterity, talking, hearing, and repetitive motion. Use of personal computing equipment, telephone, multi-functioning printer and calculator.
Employee may potentially be exposed to hazardous chemicals, wet or humid conditions, outdoor weather, noisy and dusty environment.
Ability to travel to and from meetings, training sessions or other business events. After hours work may be required.

Physical Demands

Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met.
