Position Summary

A technical leader with direct responsibilities over the Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS) which includes DER SCADA, DER forecasting/analytics and DER scheduling/dispatch capabilities to support CPS Energy reliability and market requirements.   Responsible for the uptime and accuracy of the DERMS, safety and security issues affecting the DERMS, meeting applicable regulations and standards, and responding to users and stakeholders of other business units in a timely manner.  This position is also responsible for collaborating and aligning technical efforts with EDS, ESMO, Corporate Communications, Customer Service, and Enterprise Information Technology to provide the optimal solution for internal and external customers.  This position will lead implementations of distribution/DER automation programs and process improvements as part of the EDS, Customer Service, and ESMO Business Plans for Self-Optimizing Grid (SOG) and energy market participation.  Responsibilities also include participating in DERMS strategy, overseeing application development, changes, testing (change management), and support the planning for future application upgrades or replacements, timely distribution of real time data, patch management.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Utilizes established procedures and processes to perform assigned tasks under direct supervision
  • Minimal financial responsibility
  • Assisting with the development and implementation of internal work processes
  • Assist with gathering information for both internal and external customers
  • Attends seminars, continuing education opportunities for professional development  
  • Desgin and maintenance of integration to business applications needed for effective DERMS operations. These integrations include but not limited to SAP/ERP, Cascade, GMS, MOSS, ADMS, AMI, Web, mobile technologies, GIS, and other SCADA Systems or DER aggregators.  
    •    Facilitates, leads, and collaborates across multiple departments working as a cross functional team leader to develop DER related business processes and efficiencies associated with key business unit DER initiatives.
    •    Facilitates, leads, and collaborates across multiple departments working as a cross functional team leader to drive process improvements and efficiencies associated with key business unit initiatives.
    •    Ensures  maintenance of the DERMS and associated advanced applications to ensure 24/7 availability and accuracy for DER visibility and dispatch.
    •    Ensures DERMS technology deployment is well documented using CPS Energy standard documenting processes
    •    Provides 24/7 control room support for System Operations, ESMO controllers and Customer Service groups.
    •    Ensures displays, data, and controls are effective, accurate and up-to-date.
    •    Innovates and facilitates development or deployment and testing of new technology and advanced applications to support CPS Energy DER initiatives.
    •    Collaborate with EIT, Cyber Security, and Network Engineering to ensure systems are optimally configured for performance and high availability as well as secure from physical and cyber attacks.
    •    Ensures systems meet NERC, ITGC, NIST and/or any other internal or external auditing requirements as required.
    •    Lead the timely and accurate distribution of data to groups within and outside of CPS Energy.
    •    Serve as technical mentor to junior engineers and educate stakeholders and peers on DERMS functionality
    •    Provide technical input into the department budget development with next level leadership
    •    Reports DERMS technologies and enhancements as needed to leadership
    •    Stays current with new technology and industry trends to provide solutions to customers and process improvements to recommend and drive business benefits and efficiencies.   
    •    Participate in industry working groups to stay apprised of latest DERMS methods and technologies
    •    Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Skills

Minimum Knowledge and Abilities

Basic knowledge of fundamental engineering concepts, practices and procedures
Ability to work in a team environment, coordinating with other related areas to complete tasks and projects
Effective interpersonal skills and written communication skills to work with all levels of personnel within the organization
Ability to perform multiple work activities with a minimum of supervision and prioritize workload effectively
Ability to use personal initiative to recognize needs and research skills to solve problems when necessary
Ability to work call duty and occasional unscheduled work in the evenings, weekends, or holidays after experience level permits
Ability to travel occasionally, to off-site work, to seminars, manufacturing plant inspections, etc.
Ability to obtain Professional Engineer License in State of Texas
Proficient in Microsoft Office Package, including word processing, spreadsheets, database, presentation software, electronic mail and scheduling

Preferred Qualifications

  • Engineer In Training (EIT) designation from Texas Board of Professional Engineers 
  • Basic experience with electric distribution or transmission systems 
  • Technical writing experience or college course work in technical writing
  • Experience with Computer Aided-Drafting systems and Bentley Microstation software
  • Familiarity with ESRI GIS software and Arc FM Designer software
  • Experience with SAP and Work Manager software

Minimum Education

Bachelors of Science degree in an engineering field from an ABET accredited four-year college or university

Required Certifications

Working Environment

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. Operating computer, manual dexterity, talking, hearing, and repetitive motion. Use of personal computing equipment, telephone, multi-functioning printer and calculator.
Employee may potentially be exposed to hazardous chemicals, wet or humid conditions, outdoor weather, noisy and dusty environment.
Ability to travel to and from meetings, training sessions or other business-related events. After hours work may be required.

Physical Demands

Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking & standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met.
