Position Summary

The Director Day Ahead & Real Time Operations role is responsible for serving our Native Load obligations at the lowest possible cost and maximizing revenue generation from our electric generation portfolio. This position provides executive leadership and management of CPS Energy’s Qualified Scheduling Entity (QSE) functions, including Day Ahead and Real Time Operations, within the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) wholesale electricity market; oversees CPS Energy’s short-term and mid-term wholesale power trading activities;  drives asset utilization and optimization strategies (including demand side and renewable resources) in Day Ahead and Real Time markets through refinement of decision processes and analytic analysis; directs the congestion management program; and spearheads department compliance and internal controls activities.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Formulate and implement short-term and long-term vision and associated strategies to guide CPS Energy’s participation in Day Ahead and Real Time activities within the ERCOT wholesale market.
  • Establish the strategy and direct the negotiation and execution of short-term and mid-term power-related sales or purchases.
  • Ensure effective coordination of fuel supply and related services with internal and external stakeholders so that fuel supplies are utilized in a manner that results in the lowest delivered cost.
  • Direct the process to capture energy and ancillary service transaction data and provide information to support settlement, invoice processing, accounting, and other reporting.
  • Direct and oversee the implementation of appropriate process controls and identification of process control deficiencies.  Direct and oversee continuous improvement activities to maintain a focus on Operational Excellence.
  • Direct and oversee CPS Energy’s congestion management program and ensure strategies are utilized with appropriate controls and in accordance with approved policies and procedures.
  • Maintain ethical and effective working relationships with energy counterparties to support CPS Energy’s power and related service needs.
  • Maintain current knowledge of ERCOT market conditions, market prices, and significant industry trends and communicate this information to the Energy Portfolio Strategy Committee and other CPS Energy business units.
  • Represent CPS Energy in the ERCOT stakeholder process and in other industry organizations/events as appropriate.
  • Identify, implement, and oversee performance metrics to assess the effectiveness of the Day Ahead and Real Time organization.
  • Leads, develops and retains a team by providing coaching and developmental opportunities that continuously build both individual and team capabilities.
  • Contributes to the development and execution of functional or departmental business plans.
  • Assures business continuity plans are developed and implemented to ensure continuity of control room operations during off-normal conditions.
  • Interface with Power Generation leadership on issues related to performance, coordination, and operational compliance including air emissions. 
  • Manage the strategy, and oversee the dispatching, operation, cycling, and load following of all Power Generation power plants to minimize costs and maximize financial returns. 
  • Negotiates power purchase agreements and other service-related agreements such as providing QSE services.
  • Ensure the coordination and implementation of a comprehensive and formal risk management strategy and process for Day Ahead and Real Time operations. 
  • Direct and administer organizational compliance with all applicable laws, statutes, policies and procedures to include the ERCOT Nodal Protocols and the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration Control Room Management requirements.
  • Oversee departmental process and procedures documentation as well as associated staff training plans and activities. 
  • Perform other special assignments and projects as assigned.

Minimum Skills

Minimum Knowledge and Abilities

Experience in electric power industry, including demonstrated successful experience in energy marketing, independent system operations, power or gas trading, or QSE operations.
Experience negotiating power purchase agreements
Experience interacting directly with wholesale customers, power traders, industry executives, and/or ERCOT executives.
Ability to engage, establish and maintain good working relationships with stakeholders, both internal and external with diverse backgrounds.
Leadership experience, to include managing a team and conducting performance reviews.
Experience leading cross-functional teams, people and projects in a matrixed organization.
A demonstrated ability to work effectively laterally, bring people along, facilitate the best thinking and build trust-based relationships to deliver results.
Must pass NERC-related background checks.
Exceptional critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills with a data-driven approach.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Package, including word processing, spreadsheets, database, presentation software, electronic mail and scheduling.
Possess a valid driver’s license with a history of a safe driving record in accordance with CPSE policies, procedures, safety standards, and applicable laws and regulations.
Knowledge of ERCOT stakeholder processes
Power pricing, energy risk management, and congestion revenue rights

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Mathematics, Economics, Business Administration, Accounting or one of the natural sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, etc)
  • Master’s degree in Business Administration, Management, Economics, or related field 
  • Experience with management of QSE operations is desired

Minimum Education

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.

Required Certifications

Working Environment
