Position Summary

The Analyst Energy Portfolio Analytics position supports qualitative and quantitative analysis functions for the Energy Portfolio Analytics (EPA) section of the Energy Supply & Market Operations (ESMO) department. The role requires research and analysis to support planning, budgeting, and decision-making for CPS Energy wholesale power contracts (Power Purchase Agreements, Bilateral Sales, Heat Rate Call Options, etc).  Data and information management, communication, and presentation of analysis methodologies and results are required. Role will also support pricing strategy, power forecasting, and market operations in various capacities

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Researches and provides cost and performance information for all types of wholesale power contracts.
  • Develops and manages long-range cost forecasts for energy resources, products, and other items related to resource planning.
  • Researches market information and works with CPS Energy internal subject matter experts and consultants to support forecast developments.
  • Learns and stays abreast of key energy policies and regulations that may impact cost, planning and decision-making for generation resources.
  • Provides analysis support on various type of projects such as new power plant projects, plant upgrade and retirement decisions and Requests for Proposals (RFPs) on solar, wind, energy storage and other types of resources.
  • Develop and maintain models to perform statistical analysis, including multivariate regression, to support forecasting and analysis. 
  • Manages large data sets and extracts information applications in various projects and processes. 
  • Utilizes computer-based business models, such as Excel, Metrix, Demand Response Management System (DRMS) / Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS), SAS , Aurora, Gen Trader, Tableau, Alteryx, and/or other analysis tools to conduct analysis.
  • Presents analysis methodologies and results to internal stakeholders, providing recommendations as needed.
  • Performs other research and analysis as assigned.
  • Performs tasks with moderate supervision and support from EPA Management and other senior team members.
     

Minimum Skills

Minimum Knowledge and Abilities

Understanding of basic principles of electricity production, power plant operations, and electricity and fuel markets.
Basic knowledge of the CPS Energy Resource Portfolio and other Resources in the long-range plan or under consideration
Basic knowledge of ERCOT Market principles and protocols.
Basic knowledge of Utility Principles.
Ability to work on cross-functional teams.
Experience in Microsoft Office Package, including word processing, spreadsheets, database, presentation software, electronic mail and scheduling.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree from an accredited university, particular an MBA
  • Advanced analytics experience (Excel, Python, SQL, Tableau, Alteryx, etc.)
  • Knowledge and experience in modeling wholesale power contracts (Power Purchase Agreements, Bilateral Sales, Heat Rate Call Options, etc)
  • Knowledge and experience with Production Cost Modeling, Energy Settlement Systems, and Front Office Systems, specifically Power Cost Inc (PCI) and Energy Exemplar (Aurora) products  or similar
  • Advanced math skills including algebra and statistics

Minimum Education

Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Economics, Engineering or related field from an accredited university. OR Critical analytical experience demonstrated in a similar position.

Working Environment

The work environment includes extensive indoor work, computer usage, manual dexterity, talking on the phone and in-person, hearing, and performing repetitive motions.
Must have the ability to travel to and from meetings, training sessions, and other business-related events.

Physical Demands

Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
