Position Summary

Provides climate & sustainability services and solutions such as regulatory/legislative analysis on climate-related topics, reporting, and strategic planning by promoting sound stewardship and sustainable practices throughout the company. Applies theory and principles of climate & sustainability as the area evolves and supports data gathering and calculations for carbon. As a Climate & Sustainability Analyst, you will work closely with the Managing Principal & Sr Manager of Climate Strategy & Sustainability in partnership with other business units, to participate in the development and implementation of various strategies that help reduce the overall carbon footprint of the utility while still maintaining a focus on security, safety, reliability, affordability and resiliency.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Analyzes federal, state, and local climate and sustainability-related regulations/legislation that impact CPS Energy in its planning and/or operations and develops options for meeting commitments/goals with impacted work areas. 
  • Prepares and submits Greenhouse Gas Inventory data to local agencies such as the City of San Antonio (CoSA).
  • Gathers and prepares data from across the company for benchmarking purposes or for the various annual Sustainability/Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) reports.
  • Data collection, validation, analysis, and interpretation, according to applicable protocols with a gap analysis between current year and previous year measurement and peer analyses.
  • Develops and manages relevant contracts for Department and user areas.
  • Core responsibilities focus on operational/tactical and administrative aspects of the organization.
  • Represents CPS Energy by responding to external partner agencies such as CoSA and SAWS as well as responding to inquiries from the public. 
  • Facilitates/coordinates meetings involving internal, external, and community stakeholders and management.
  • Participates in community activities and events promoting positive customer relations.
  • Manages climate & sustainability projects, and/or programs.
  • Coordinates job assignments and responsibilities with team members, external stakeholders, and contractors.
  • Provides input in developing environmental awareness conservation and sustainable strategies, ability to communicate the sustainability strategy of our company.
  • Maintains current professional, technical, and regulatory knowledge through attendance at seminars and workshops and through the reading of industry publications/journals.
  • Makes some recommendations and decisions and identifies alternative solutions that will have a moderate impact on the business.
  • Must be aware and may provide input to area budget.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Skills

Minimum Knowledge and Abilities

Applied fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures of climate and sustainability policy and regulations; some evaluation, originality or ingenuity is required.
Important to this position are: analytical, project, and time management skills, collaboration, critical thinking, speaking & presenting, tech writing, active listening & learning, coordination, complex problem solving, quality judgment & decision making.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Package, including word processing, spreadsheets, database, presentation software, electronic mail and scheduling.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional experience or a combination of professional and/or applicable operational experience supporting environmental or climate & sustainability projects that demonstrates the ability to carry out the tasks and responsibilities defined in this job description.
  • Experience with sustainability program management, climate science, life cycle assessments, energy and sustainability policy, ESG, and net zero strategy. 
  • Ability to develop alternative solutions, prioritize, and complete work projects/assignments on schedule, and to achieve Department’s goals/objectives with limited supervision.
  • Ability to deal diplomatically with customers, employees, and all levels of management.
  • Strong organizational skills, along with the ability to handle multiple and/or fluctuating priorities in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Initiative to work independently or as a member of a team, coordinating with others to achieve desired results.

Minimum Education

Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Physical Science, Environmental/Climate Science, or Master’s degree in related field from an accredited university.

Required Certifications

Working Environment

Indoor work, operating computer, manual dexterity, talking, hearing, repetitive motion. Use of personal computing equipment, telephone, multi-functioning printer and calculator.
Ability to travel to and from meetings, training sessions or other business related events.

Physical Demands

Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met.
