Position Summary

The Administrator Database position is responsible for provisioning and setting up data platform technologies that are both on-premises and in the cloud. This includes Database Administration, data architecture, backup and recovery, performance tuning and optimization, capacity planning, security and auditing, master data and metadata management, database development for mission critical database systems.  The Database administrator is also accountable for securing and integrating with data platform technologies and application services in Azure. This position is responsible for services and tools to import, export, and transform data from multiple sources and collaborate with business stakeholders to identify and meet data requirements.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Maintains the ongoing operational databases (Oracle, SQL Server) ensuring system performance, availability, reliability, security, recoverability, change management, regulatory compliances, and efficient usage of server infrastructure resources. 
  • Performs the capacity planning required to build and maintain corporate databases to meet the processing demands.
  • Provides database solutions to solve complex business issues including data processing, loading, performance improvements, data storage and data replication.
  • Diagnoses, troubleshoots, and resolves database related issues including storage, performance, availability, data integrity and database security. 
  • Performs and automates database management, maintenance, and data processing activities. 
  • Applies understanding of modern networks and operating systems as they pertain to database system architecture and functionality. 
  • Develops scripts to perform system maintenance, monitor systems, automate tasks, etc. 
  • Documents processes related to database design, configuration, standards, and performance.
  • Performs as technology subject matter expert for relational database management systems such as Oracle 12c, 18c, 19c, 21c, MS SQL Server 2014, 2016, 2017, and 2019 Enterprise Edition.
  • Creates, modifies, maintains, and optimizes database objects such as indexes, tables, partitions, triggers, constraints, stored procedures, large objects, views, etc. 
  • Works as part of a project team to coordinate database development and determine project scope and limitations. 
  • Evaluates business needs and objectives, performs feasibility analysis, requirements analysis, and estimates work effort of project deliverables and trains users.  
  • Performs the logical and physical database design and communicates the designs to management and customers.
  • Determines user accounts and audits user access levels for each segment of database and grants access appropriately. 
  • Evaluates releases of Oracle, MS SQL Server and its tools, and third-party products to ensure that the organization is running the products that are most appropriate.
  • Installs, configures, administers, and troubleshoots Oracle RAC, Data Guard, Golden Gate, Multi-tenant, Flashback Databases, OEM (Oracle Enterprise Manager).
  • Collaboration with various technical/non-technical resources such as infrastructure and application teams regarding project work, POCs (Proofs of Concept) and/or troubleshooting exercises.
  • Analyzes Operating System statistics and troubleshooting performance related problems on storage, I/O (Input/Output) throughput and OS (Operating System) kernel parameters.
  • Works with structured data, unstructured data, and a wide variety of new data types.
  • Manipulates data by using languages such as SQL, PL/SQL, HiveQL, Shell Script, and Python.
  • Transforms the data from the source schema using SQL statements to the destination schema and loads the transformed data into the data warehouse.
  • On-call rotation is required to support 24/7 environment and is also expected to be able to work outside business hours to support corporate needs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

Minimum Skills

Minimum Knowledge and Abilities

Advanced experience in Oracle or MS SQL Server in a production environment.
Must have extensive experience and expert knowledge with at least 8 of the following:
Hands on experience with Oracle database administration in UNIX/LINUX and virtual environments.
Hands on experience with SQL Server administration in Windows and virtual environments.
Hands on experience with managing tools and databases in a cloud (MS Azure for example) environment.
Skilled in performing detailed performance analysis and resource utilization of systems.
Proficiency with Oracle and MS SQL Server backups, restores, and recovery.
Hands on experience with High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) options for Oracle (RAC/Data Guard) and MS SQL Server (Always-On Availability).
Know-how in migrating code and database changes through the various stages of the development life cycle.
Experience as technology subject matter expert for at least three versions of relational database management systems such as Oracle 12c, 18c, 19c, and 21c Enterprise Edition.
Hands on experience as technology subject matter expert for at least three versions of relational database management systems such as MS SQL Server 2014, 2016, 2017, and 2019 Enterprise Edition.
Expert level knowledge in installation, administration, and troubleshooting of Multi-tenant databases.
Installation, configuration, and administration of Oracle Golden Gate replication that includes troubleshooting of extracts, pump, and replication processes.
OEM (Oracle Enterprise Manager) troubleshooting of database performance tuning and generating reports using Information Publisher and BI Publisher reports.
Skilled in using Recovery Manager (RMAN) and ASM (Automatic Storage Management) for backups and storage management.
Experience using SQL Server Management Studio for SQL Server database tuning.
Experience using Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services (SSIS) and SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS).
Experience in project management concepts, tools (MS Project) and techniques.
Strong ability to organize information, manage tasks and use available tools to effectively contribute to a team and the organization.
Valid Class C Texas Driver’s License.
Makes independent recommendations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Information Systems or related field from an accredited university.
  • Image Oracle, MS SQL Server, and Microsoft Azure certifications are a plus.  
  • Experience with Hyperconverged infrastructure and MS Azure.
  • Utility Industry experience.
  • NERC (North American Electric Reliability Corporation) background and experience.

Minimum Education

Bachelor's Degree in Information Systems, Engineering, Computer Science, or related field from an accredited university.

Required Certifications

Working Environment

Indoor work, operating computer, manual dexterity, talking, hearing, repetitive motion. Use of personal computing equipment, telephone, multi-functioning printer and calculator.
Ability to travel to and from meetings, training sessions or other business-related events. After hours will be required. Overnight travel may be required.
