Position Summary

Manages, trains, directs and implements all Combustion Turbine / Gas Turbine Technical Support duties required for the Combined Cycle Power Plants and Peaking Gas Turbine Plants. Involved in, but not limited to, CT/GT Technical oversight, planning, direction and coordination of CT/GT related tasks, optimizing equipment, materials, processes and procedures, analysis and evaluation of data and establishment of goals for events as required.  Uses Engineering principles to provide Technical support and sound solutions for the Power Plants. Achieves GT/CT operational and maintenance objectives by contributing specific CT/GT Technical information and recommendations to strategic plans and reviews; preparing and completing action plans; implementing projects to improve productivity and quality; resolving problems; completing audits; identify trends; implementing change.  Develops and maintains plant budgets.  Assumes all responsibilities for the Plant Director in his/her absence as needed.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Supervise operations and maintenance team that oversees projects and manages performance activities for our Combined Cycle Plant and Gas Turbine peaking units.
  • Prepares budget submittals through cost estimating of projects.
  • Directs and coordinates projects to improve CT/GT efficiency and reliability.
  • Assumes all Plant Director Duties during his/her absence as needed.
  • Recruits employees, assign, direct and evaluate their work and oversee the development and maintenance of staff competency.
  • Analyzes and evaluates operations, maintenance and performance levels in the plant environment.
  • Makes recommendations to improve employee health and safety to support a zero accident/incident rate goal.
  • Develops equipment specifications, contractual agreements and performs project management activities such as outage planning and execution.
  • Provides specialized Technical support for operations and maintenance by formulating and implementing technical solutions for improved CT / GT unit performance.
  • Responds to operating and project needs, provides lead role for CT/GT unit and equipment performance evaluation, optimizes resource use and maximizes reliable power generation and revenue.
  • Directs department activities to support maintenance in troubleshooting the causes of repetitive failures and unusual events such as unit deratings or trips.
  • Identifies and incorporates new ideas and technologies for project development.
  • Uses economics to recommend viable reliability improvement projects.
  • Initiates, implements and completes project work as assigned or otherwise.
  • Conducts employee performance reviews for all direct reports.
  • Mentors and assists in the development of direct reports to assume roles of increasing responsibility.
  • Oversees tests that analyze design, feasibility, operation, equipment condition and performance of the facility.
  • Confers with Engineers, Management and Plant Personnel to develop mitigation plans, design modifications, operational changes and changes in maintenance practices and/or new system implementation to prevent repetitive failures and/or improve CT / GT unit performance.
  • Confers with Engineers and personnel to resolve malfunctions, review system performance, oversee repairs and improvements and review operating characteristics of all plant systems.
  • Ability to work at any CPS Energy plant locations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Skills

Minimum Knowledge and Abilities

Ability to use the plant DCS controls and other operating/monitoring/control systems.

Ability to display Extensive knowledge and experience in Combustion Turbine / Gas Turbine technologies.

Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports and legal documents.

Ability to direct multiple activities in a highly dynamic environment that requires continuous re-prioritization as determined by operational and maintenance situations that arise daily.

Ability to delegate assignments to appropriate parties.

Proficient in Microsoft Office Package, including word processing, spreadsheets, database, presentation software, electronic mail and scheduling

Possess a valid driver’s license with a history of a safe driving record in accordance with CPSE policies, procedures, safety standards, and applicable laws and regulations

Ability to work non-standard work hours such as nights, weekends and holidays as necessary to support the plant.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 7FA and/or LM6000 GT OEM Field Technical Advisor Training Certification.

Minimum Education

Bachelors of Science degree in Engineering or related field from an accredited university or Completion of OEM Field Engineer Technical Training Program for Combustion Turbines combined with the required extensive working knowledge CT/GT Field TA experience.

Working Environment

Work is performed indoors & outdoors. Manual dexterity, talking, hearing, and repetitive motion. Use of computing equipment, telephone, & printer/copier. Ability to travel to and from business related events. After hours work may be required.
