Position Summary

The Reliability & Protocols Compliance Intern will work under the guidance of a mentor to support Transmission, Energy Market, Power Generation Operations & Planning Regulatory Compliance business needs. Interns will be assigned operations and planning regulatory projects to research, track and assess. This internship will permit exposure to the student’s field of study and provide meaningful experience for future professional employment.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Read and become familiar with North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) Reliability Standards and Electric Reliability Council of
  • Texas (ERCOT) Operating Guides and Protocols.
  • Develop and utilize project management skills for electric utility operations, planning and/or procedural related projects.
  • Respond to operating and project needs, provide assisting role for implementation of regulatory related projects and performance evaluation processes.
  • Identify and incorporate new ideas and technologies for project development and recommend economically viable projects to enhance operations compliance.
  • Initiate, implement, and complete compliance related project work as assigned.
  • Review NERC and ERCOT reliability and protocols regulatory standards, monitor and assess adherence to the same using the Reliability
  • Standard Audit Worksheets (RSAWs).
  • Verification of Data for Turbine/Governor and Load Control or Active Power/Frequency Control models
  • Review and assess Protection Systems evidence and practices on the Electric Transmission System (Power Grid) compared to the NERC Reliability Standards.
  • Participate in an Audit preparation plan, prepare employees, RSAW’s, proper evidence and facilitate successful Mock Audits.
  • Work as part of the Legal Team, the Compliance Intern will interface with the different Operations business areas as well as outside regulators and other utility companies.
  • Work in a team environment and coordinate with other related areas to achieve results.

Effective oral and written communication skills with the ability to clearly communicate complex ideas and concepts to those with less technical background

Must be able to participate in full-time employment with CPS Energy for duration of summer.

Demonstrated ability to interact well with others (peers, co-workers, all levels of the organization and outside entities).

Ability to handle complex assignments, be a self-starter, be able to meet goals and deadlines on own initiative with minimum supervision

Ability to distinguish colors to determine severity of equipment conditions or changes in operating processes

Knowledgeable and supportive of all safety and environmental rules, policies, and procedures

Ability to work safely at heights, in confined spaces, around electrical facilities, in extreme temperature ranges, and in adverse temperature conditions

Ability to work at any CPS Energy facility location within Bexar County (San Antonio, TX) or Guadalupe County (Seguin, TX) as directed

Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and projects, and to use technical skills to focus ideas onto small scale projects

Effective problem solving and decision making skills to make clear and precise decisions

Personal computer experience utilizing Microsoft Office to include Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Ability to recommend solutions for improved performance and employee health / safety to support a zero accident & incident rate goal.

Minimum Education

Actively pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical or Controls engineering from accredited engineering program, or related engineering degree

Working Environment

Work is performed indoors & outdoors. Manual dexterity, talking, hearing, and repetitive motion. Use of computing equipment, telephone, & printer/copier. Ability to travel to and from business related events. After hours work may be required.
