Position Summary

The Power Generation Engineering Intern will work under the guidance an engineering mentor to support Power Generation business needs. Interns will be assigned projects to improve power plant operations, maintenance and/or performance. This internship will permit exposure to the student’s field of study and provide meaningful experience for future professional employment.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Develop and utilize project management skills for construction and/or procedural projects; Provide general assistance to Operation and Maintenance Engineers to assist with project planning and assure the safe and efficient plant production and operations.
  • Work in a team environment and coordinate with other related areas to achieve results.
  • Respond to operating and project needs, provide assisting role for plant and equipment performance evaluation.
  • Identify and incorporate new ideas and technologies for project development and recommend economically viable projects.
  • Initiate, implement, and complete project work as assigned.
  • Recommend / implement solutions for improved performance and employee health / safety to support a zero accident / incident rate goal.
  • Develop equipment specifications and monitor contractual agreements.
  • Interface as a representative of CPS Energy with consultants, vendors, contractors, and other companies.

Minimum Skills

Personal Computer Usage

Minimum Knowledge and Abilities

Effective oral and written communication skills with the ability to clearly communicate complex ideas and concepts to those with less technical background

Must have a minimum GPA of 3.0

Must be able to participate in full-time employment with CPS Energy for duration of summer.

Ability to interact with personnel at all levels of the organization and serve as a liaison for craft and management personnel

Ability to handle complex assignments, be a self-starter, be able to meet goals and deadlines on own initiative with minimum supervision

Ability to distinguish colors to determine severity of equipment conditions or changes in operating processes

Knowledgeable and supportive of all safety and environmental rules, policies, and procedures

Ability to work safely at heights, in confined spaces, around electrical facilities, in extreme temperature ranges, and in adverse temperature conditions

Ability to work at any CPS Energy facility location within Bexar County (San Antonio, TX) or Guadalupe County (Seguin, TX) as directed

Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and projects, and to use technical skills to focus ideas onto small scale projects

Effective problem solving and decision making skills to make clear and precise decisions

Personal computer experience utilizing Microsoft Office to include Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Minimum Education

Actively pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical, Electrical or Controls engineering from accredited engineering program, or related engineering degree

Required Certifications

Working Environment

Indoor work, operating computer, manual dexterity, talking, hearing, repetitive motion. Use of personal computing equipment, telephone, multi-functioning printer and calculator. Ability to travel between business related events. Work hours may be extended.
