Position Summary

CPS Energy is looking for a Engineer to add value and improve processes for our team!

This Engineer position is responsible for the lifecycle of underground distribution projects, from the design phase to construction and beyond. The Engineer will be required to work with multiple departments during project creation and make necessary adjustments to coordinate projects when possible. Engineer will also be responsible for reviewing and approving designs completed by CPS Energy Designers. The Engineer will develop and/or update underground engineering philosophies and standards to ensure quality, consistency, and safety.

 

Each candidate will be matched to a particular grade level based on the management team's qualitative assessment of the candidate's skills, abilities and previouse experience to align with CPS Energy internal peers amd organizational needs.

Tasks and Responsibilities
  • Perform a variety of engineering functions to support the design of underground electric distribution systems
  • Develop and maintain project budgets, including analysis of total costs, current expenditures and estimates of costs to complete project work.
  • Manage the use of contract services, prepare construction job packages, evaluate work for completeness and technical accuracy, evaluate billing and provides technical advice as required.
  • Develop purchase orders for materials, equipment and construction services. Work closely with purchasing throughout the bidding, analysis, and award phases of the purchasing process. Evaluate bids for technical completeness, cost, and other factors as required.
  • Demonstrate technical expertise and leadership to support Design staff
  • Provide internal and external customers with technical requirements and expertise to ensure underground systems are designed in accordance with approved standards
  • Review customer-driven, non-standard design requests
  • Perform streetlight analysis and design
  • Coordinate with external engineering design and construction contractors
  • Provide oral and written presentations and/or reports
  • Develop and implement design/workflow processes
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Knowledge and Abilities
Ability to demonstrate expertise and proficiency in the design of electrical distribution design standards, field operations or construction practices and the use of various operational systems.
Applies engineering and critical thinking skills in the investigation, analysis and implementation of issues and or tasks
Identify and recommend improvements to processes and procedures
Knowledge in providing support/analytics to project management.
Knowledge of operational methodologies of utility systems
Ability to handle complex assignments, be a self-starter, be able to meet goals and deadlines on own initiative with minimum supervision
Demonstrated capability with effectively communicating complex ideas and analysis verbally, in document format, and in presentation format at the executive level
Experienced in functioning as lead over a project that involves coordinating with multiple personnel.
Applies knowledge of fundamental electrical concepts, practices, and procedures
Possess a valid driver’s license with a history of a safe driving record in accordance with CPSE policies, procedures, safety standards, and applicable laws and regulations
Demonstrates proficiency in basic management of projects and assignments
Ability to make independent decisions and often makes recommendations which affect the section, department and/or division
Preferred Qualifications
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) designation certification from Texas Board of Professional Engineers
  • Licensed as a Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of Texas
  • Experience with CADD software, GIS, Work Manager
  • Experience in managing projects and meeting deadlines
  • Comprehensive hands-on experience in power systems analysis, distribution and or substation engineering
  • Strong background and knowledge of underground system design and associated equipment
  • Exhibits the highest level of engineering judgment/technical expertise and may include limited supervisory responsibilities
  • Knowledge of underground electric distribution design and construction standards
  • Knowledge of AGI32 software or equivalent light design software
  • Knowledge of NESC, IEEE, IES, NEC and RUS standards
  • Knowledge of Microstation CAD drafting program

Minimum Education
Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering field from ABET accredited

Work is performed indoors & outdoors. Manual dexterity, talking, hearing, and repetitive motion. Use of computing equipment, telephone, & printer/copier. Ability to travel to and from business related events. After hours work may be required
